iPod Garage : iPod, iTunes, and Music : News, Commentary, and Reviews : Switch to the iPod Garage - Podcasting servers and multiple camera techniques: "Here's something I hadn't noticed, and that Apple hasn't really promoted in any way. Tiger Server has podcast serving capabilities built-in. So what do they do they bury all of that goodness in the Education solutions section of their website"

iPod for Oral Histories

courant.com | Teaching With Ipods? Of Course
: "Miller is encouraging UConn's faculty to find other creative uses for podcasting. Chemistry Professor Harry Frank, for example, has begun creating podcasts of prominent scientists who come to campus.

'It's like an oral history. ... I have them sit down for five minutes and explain what they're doing,' said Frank, who is also associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences."

This is one of the great uses for podcasting: creating oral histories of things happening right now.

Anyone can start doing this, a portable recorder like an Olympus DS-2 or an iPod with an iTalk can do quite a bit.

All you are trying to do is elicit stories of what happened.

Where were you when...?
Why were you there?
What were you doing?
Who were you there to see?
How did you meet her/him?
What happened next?
How would you explain something like that to Grandma?

These are good questions to start with.

Podcasting is one of the easiest ways to get the word out about something. All you have to be able to do is talk into a recorder and upload the recording to the web. Many people are stymied when faced with a blank page whether it be paper or a word processor. Podcasting skips this whole block by allowing you to just talk about your favorite things.

How To Listen to Podcasts

What is a podcast?

A podcast is simply an audio file that is available on a website that your computer can download for you using an aggregator so you can take it along with you using a portable music player. A podcast frees you from stopping to listen at a particular place or time and you can stop and rewind or fast forward however you want. Take them with you for your morning jog, for the commute to work or just to listen to while doing yard work.

What is an aggregator?

An aggregator is a program on your computer that goes out and looks at specific websites that you tell it to looking for new content. This will happen in the background as you use your computer.
iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) is a good one to use. There are others such as iPodder (http://www.ipodder.org). They are also known as podcatchers.

Do I need an iPod to listen to podcasts?

No, you don't. Any mp3 player will work including the iPod. You can listen to a podcast right on your computer or if you only have a CD player in your car you could burn podcasts to a CDR and listen that way.

Listening to Podcasts

Once you have downloaded the latest version of iTunes, click on Podcasts in the Source pane. That will bring up a blank screen, except way on the bottom there a few buttons to press; click on Podcast Directory. The Podcast Directory is a part of the iTunes Music Store and right now all podcasts are free.

Where Can I find Podcasts to Listen to?

There are a lot of podcasts available at the iTunes Music Store, over 15,000, so where to start. One of the best ones to start with is Adam Curry's Podfinder podcast. It is a sampling of about a dozen different podcasts everyday giving you a sample of what is out there.

You can also search all podcasts to find things that you are interested about. News, Sports, Health, Music, Religion, Travel and far more are all available to take with you where ever you go.

There are other places to go like Yahoo, Podcasting News and Odeo.

What if I find a website that has a podcast but isn't listed in iTunes?

That is not a problem. The website will have a feed listed all you have to do is copy that URL and paste it into iTunes under the Advanced>Subscribe to Podcast menu item. That will pop up a dialog box that you can paste it in. It will be added and checked automatically.

Welcome to the iPod Garage Engineer Blog

Welcome. I am Stephan Fassmann. I write for iPod Garage as the iPod Garage Engineer.

I tend to write about how to podcast and how to use the iPod in various ways to enhance your life.

I decided to setup this separate blog for all things iPod that I would like to keep organized in one place rather then all over my other blog.

There are a number of items I see during the week that I would like to keep track of and this would be a great place to do that.
