How To Listen to Podcasts

What is a podcast?

A podcast is simply an audio file that is available on a website that your computer can download for you using an aggregator so you can take it along with you using a portable music player. A podcast frees you from stopping to listen at a particular place or time and you can stop and rewind or fast forward however you want. Take them with you for your morning jog, for the commute to work or just to listen to while doing yard work.

What is an aggregator?

An aggregator is a program on your computer that goes out and looks at specific websites that you tell it to looking for new content. This will happen in the background as you use your computer.
iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) is a good one to use. There are others such as iPodder (http://www.ipodder.org). They are also known as podcatchers.

Do I need an iPod to listen to podcasts?

No, you don't. Any mp3 player will work including the iPod. You can listen to a podcast right on your computer or if you only have a CD player in your car you could burn podcasts to a CDR and listen that way.

Listening to Podcasts

Once you have downloaded the latest version of iTunes, click on Podcasts in the Source pane. That will bring up a blank screen, except way on the bottom there a few buttons to press; click on Podcast Directory. The Podcast Directory is a part of the iTunes Music Store and right now all podcasts are free.

Where Can I find Podcasts to Listen to?

There are a lot of podcasts available at the iTunes Music Store, over 15,000, so where to start. One of the best ones to start with is Adam Curry's Podfinder podcast. It is a sampling of about a dozen different podcasts everyday giving you a sample of what is out there.

You can also search all podcasts to find things that you are interested about. News, Sports, Health, Music, Religion, Travel and far more are all available to take with you where ever you go.

There are other places to go like Yahoo, Podcasting News and Odeo.

What if I find a website that has a podcast but isn't listed in iTunes?

That is not a problem. The website will have a feed listed all you have to do is copy that URL and paste it into iTunes under the Advanced>Subscribe to Podcast menu item. That will pop up a dialog box that you can paste it in. It will be added and checked automatically.
